i've been so sleepy the past few days, but restless all night. i'll find earth in a few days i think...

i managed to demo a new tune today. just a really short transitional track, but they all have their place.

the seasons are finally changing, and i'm thrilled. this time of year has proven to be the most productive for me in the past, and judging by the departing summer, this year should (hopefully) be no different.

i'd really like to start building another live band soon. i've played a few solo shows recently, and though it's been a nice change and totally outside my comfort zone, which i think is healthy, i'm definitely ready to be working with people again... i need a lap steel and/or pedal steel player and a drummer. respectable gear is a big plus, and willingness to tour is also a must... know anyone? get at me here... popvulture.damonmoon@gmail.com

i've been working a ton of hours lately to try to make money to buy the rest of the gear we need to do the next record. we're close, but it'll still be another 2 months before we're ready... but i've already been getting really excited about recording the next record. i really don't want to spend forever working on it, but i'm looking forward to immersing myself in another huge project. recording the last ep was nice, but the whole recording process only took a few days, really. i recently found the room we'll be doing most of the tracking in for the new record. it's huge, all wood, and has a pretty great vibe. tucked deep into the woods, with no internet, there shouldn't be many distractions. photos of this place soon...

today i started demoing an old song, "tonight, sometimes", but way different than previous versions... casio drums, sick bassline, dub style almost. stoked about the way it's coming along.. really just needs real drums, and lots of feedback and stuff for a big ending... which brings me to these...

which i'll be picking up tomorrow. old 60s jap kit, but all fixed up. i've already heard them, and they sound great...

on july 4th, i went to a flea market, and found another gem, which i practically stole. i've been working with this thing a bit already, and this changes everything. sounds sooooo good.

vintage altec 1220 board. this thing has great pres, a sick compressor, and great reverb.. things have been lookin' up.. let's keep this up.

just got home from an intense all night drive from richmond. mini tour was a total success. richmond's set might have been the best 30 minutes in the history of this project. so stoked to end the tour that way.

had an unexpected day off, but i made the most of it. spent the morning and early afternoon working on a demo of an older song, "in the dark", that somehow never managed to get recorded. it's coming along nicely. quite different than things we do live, but one of the best, and most personal, songs i've ever written, easily. it's one of those songs that i still have no idea how or when i wrote. one day it was just there in my little black book, and now i just try to respect it and do it justice as best i can... i do suspect it was around this time last year though.. also spent some time today working out some new ideas, hopefully those flesh out fully in the near..

spent the rest of the afternoon preparing a huge dinner of curry chicken, jasmine rice with mixed veggies, and a potato/carrot medley (haha).. fulfillment at it's finest.

after dinner, i went for a good long jog, and i feel great now.. settling down now for the evening with a glass of red and the last few chapters of "big sur"...

stop worrying so much about delivery. the point is that the package does get there. it is received. regardless of what shape it's in when it arrives. nothing is resolved. nothing gets resolved. just devoured. it's just like sugar, floating around in a tall glass of southern sweet tea, it never settles, and that's okay. it's more than okay. if it were to ever settle, that tea would be bad. the sugar is there to restlessly wander the glass, forever to drift through the caramel brown abyss, sweetening the taste for any lucky whoareyou who happens to sip from it. that's all anyone can do, and i don't think any of us can rightfully ask for anything more from anyone. all we can do is write it down, sing it, raving mad and feverish, and hope that there are some ears to receive it. to speak with as much intent as a traffic ticket, as much purpose as a natural spring, and as unambiguous as a blue sky, i think, is the only way we can know that we've done everything we can do. just throw it out, but do it with intent, purpose, and clarity. delivery is perception.

avoiding the pen like a plague, i've been running. afraid that when i pick it back up, it'll be all dried out and useless. i feel a little cheated and i don't know why.. the cold glow of hospital lights can turn a shadow into a wall; something i can't get past. you can't stop what's coming, neither can i. i think perspective could be another word for that belief.. perspective could be defined as the way you view something. but at what point does something stop being just a perspective? at that point, does it become the past just because it's inevitable? or is there something between the two? is perspective unique to the eye of the beholder, or is it universal? regardless, it's something i don't have much of anymore. i can't see past the next mile marker, and i won't pretend to anymore. it's hard to keep up when you're keepin' on, and my lady of the highway is strong. too strong, perhaps..

i can't remember when i last updated.. everything has been a bit of a blur since then. long, but eventful, days of recording and short nights of little sleep.. everything is moving along though...

...and by eventful, i mean that chris almost died while tracking some slide guitar, literally... we had been working all afternoon, and chris was complaining of weird chest pains.. eventually, while we were tracking some guitar on twenty echoes, the pain got so bad, we decided a trip to the ER was in order. scary stuff.. they had him in a bed with monitors hooked up to him in no time. a few hours later, they released him, with not much of an explanation as to what happened. he's feeling better now, but everyone is still confused as to what was causing the pain..

as of today, all the instruments are completely tracked. we started doing vocals yesterday i think. so far, two songs are completely finished, and we've started vocals on two others. earlier tonight, i started to feel like my voice didn't have much left in it, so we're taking the rest of the evening off, and we'll start tackling what's left tomorrow afternoon. excitement is setting in as we're getting close to finishing all the tracking. it's been a long time since we officially released anything, and i don't know that i've ever been more proud of anything i've done musically. hopefully we'll be releasing something online soon! more details soon!

day two of recording is over. got a lot done today as well.. lap steel is pretty much all wrapped up, and these songs are sounding siiiick.. jacob killed it on every tune. tomorrow morning, we'll be tracking bass and keys, and tomorrow evening we'll be starting on the other electric tracks.. so far, we've made good progress on 5 songs, and there's 2 more that are still in the early stages of recording, being held up by scratch guitar tracks, which i'll be playing catch up on tomorrow morning before everyone gets here, hah. all in all, we're way excited about the way everything is sounding, and i can't wait to get this EP out. more updates soon!

i miss the van. i miss waking up in the van. i miss the feeling of traveling with four of my best friends. the gas stations, the friends, new and old, townes and deer tick on repeat, the northeast, the winter, the snow, the tired eyes, the cheap coffee, the long drives, the short drives, the not knowing, the shows, the good nights, the HIGHWAY... i miss being conscious of the now within all that.

recording has commenced! today was productive. we got all the full drum kit tracking done for 6 songs, and a good bit of my guitar tracks laid down as well. the drum sound is surprisingly big, for such a small kit, and the guitars are sounding siiick. still a little more to do tomorrow with random percussion, but everything is moving quickly and sounding great. really excited to start working again in the morning.. so tired though. so for now, early to bed, early to rise. more updates soon!

i've spent the day tuning our drums, dampening them, and getting them ready to be recorded.. also, making tracking charts so we know what we have to do for each song, testing pedals, going over guitar parts, and taking care of other general recording preparations. needless to say, i'm pretty excited for what's to come, and i think we're ready to make some good things happen. we have a large list of tunes we're hoping to track out next week, and i feel pretty good about everything. i've never worked with any kind of time constraints like this, but i think it's going to be a healthy challenge. hopefully, over the course of our time at the lake house, we'll have time to post some pictures, videos, and other updates. so many good things in the future...

for now, a 6 pack of shiner and bob dylan are rounding out my evening quite nicely.

a big thank you to everyone who came out to help us celebrate at the drunken unicorn. righteous times. we're taking a break form the live show for a while to record... we're hitting the studio sometime around the 12th for a few days..

we're recording in a lake house, on lake knottley, way up in the mountains of north ga. it's a beautiful house. it has a huge living room with wood floors, and 25 ft wood ceilings, which we will be using as the live room. sounds incredible in there. we'll be working on the next ep, which we hope to have out both online and in physical form by late may, just in time for our next tour, in early june...

i'm floored about working in this house. it has a basement with a vintage pool table, a wrap around porch, and a nice little dock, all right on the lake. the sunset is amazing from anywhere in and around the house as well. plenty of space to relax during downtime... looking really forward to being productive in such a beautiful space. here's a few photos we took upon our first visit. everything will be rearranged for recording of course, but this room is amazing...

this tour is almost over. we're at a hotel in orange, tx. we play hattiesburg, ms tomorrow night, then we'll be driving all night to get home. i think it's safe to say there's mixed emotions for everyone about going home... the part of it all where we have to readjust to normal life is always weird and frustrating, none of us are looking forward to that... there are definitely things we're all looking forward to as well though. should be an interesting period... there's quite a few things on the plate for the near future... here's a rundown.

- we're releasing a short documentary filmed and edited on the road, chronicling the 5 weeks of this tour, condensed down to 12 and a half minutes. should be up very soon.
- i recorded a few little guitar and vocal versions of some of my favorite songs while on the road. we're going to try to release them all for free soon.
- after april 2nd, we're taking a break from the live show to start working more on preproduction for the next record.
- we're shopping around for a location to start recording the next album. it is largely written, but there's still plenty of planning to do.
- we'll be back on the road in june, doing a short run up and down the coast... tentative dates soon.

it's always come in quick bursts for me. a frantic and sleepless evening spent with a guitar, then not another for a long time. i don't like to place limitations around myself that way, it's just an observation though... but if tonight is not one of those, i feel like it's close.

in raleigh at a coffee shop. the road is already taxing, but good! asheville was fun. played a show with tony wain and the payne, and crashed with them afterwards. excited for our show tonight, and just added a new shop in columbus, oh at ruby tuesday! things are lookin' really good. short drive tomorrow to greenville, nc, and then a long haul to DC the next day. more soon!

it's all that's ever on my mind these days... rightfully so, two weeks from right now, we'll be in chattanooga. our tour posters are being printed this weekend.. they're going to be pretty rad. have a look here...

there's a whole lot of huge things happening right now, some of which are not yet ready to be revealed. i don't know that i've ever been more excited about press, but this is going to be good. stay tuned for that...

spent this evening bumming around town, looking for a heavy winter coat with jacob and ashley, and then spent several hours working on last minute booking stuff with jacob. got a whole lot done too.

show this coming wednesday, debuting the new lineup in athens, all new material, no old stuff. thought it'd be nice to give everyone around here a taste of what's coming. 2/10 @ caledonia with macgregor burns, bow legged gorilla, and geisterkatzen. come kick it and have a drink. word on the street is there's an after party... should be a pretty good time..

the tour lineup is officially settled, as of a few days ago. we had a full rehearsal this past monday, and everything is sounding great! all the shows for this tour are looking pretty solid, and the first big leg of the tour is pretty intense.. 8 or 9 shows straight, with no days off until we hit columbus, oh.. we're all pretty excited about that.

we were really trying to have an EP ready to push for this tour, but with a recent computer crash, resulting in the loss of all the recording we had been doing, it's looking like instead, we'll have a CD-R available for a few bucks or donations, of some newer demos we had been recording before the crash..

plenty of new things coming, slowly but surely..

it seems the new tour lineup has been solidified. we had a partial rehearsal tonight to get things going, and it's sounding great so far. we start real rehearsals very soon... i'm really excited to get this lineup out on the road, and on a different stage every night...
